Rhonda Roman of Vacaville, California reads to her son Keith, 12, from a book they found on the mobile book cart. Seventh-grader Keith, battling an autoimmune disease, was just one of the many patients at Children's Hospital Oakland who benefited from the healing power of reading.
Hospital volunteer Sarah Scott makes the rounds from room to room handing out books to young patients. Participating clinics and hospitals go through thousands of books each year, circulating books to various hospital rooms for children facing long days and weeks of treatment.
