Half Price Books Partners with the National Center for Family Literacy
to Celebrate New Store Opening in Springhurst

Proceeds of National Storybook Project Benefiting NCFL

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (November 7, 2007) — As part of its newest store opening, Half Price Books, one of the nation’s largest new and used bookstore chains, has partnered with Louisville-based National Center for Family Literacy (NCFL) to help fund literacy programs through its “Say Good Night to Illiteracy” storybook program.

NCFL founder and president Sharon Darling will lead the ribbon cutting ceremony at 2 p.m., Thursday, November 15 to officially open the new location at 10220 Westport Rd., near Springhurst Town Center, and will kick off “Say Good Night to Illiteracy” book sales in Louisville. Additionally, 5 percent of net sales from Half Price Books opening day will benefit the NCFL.

“With the support of Half Price Books and its customers, we will be able to continue to pioneer programs and initiatives that address the root causes of illiteracy,” said Darling. “This is an important issue and we encourage parents to instill a lifelong love of learning in their children.”

The 13th edition of “Say Good Night to Illiteracy” is a colorfully illustrated book that includes 20 poems and stories for children from writers and artists all across America. It retails for $4.98 and all proceeds go to NCFL. One of the featured authors chosen from more than 3,000 entries is Louisville resident Cindy Peebles.

“Working to improve literacy is an important part of our company’s mission statement and we strive to achieve this goal with each store we open,” said Kathy Doyle Thomas, executive vice president of Half Price Books. “We are honored to help the NCFL make a difference in the lives of families here in Louisville and across the nation.”

The new Half Price Books store is the company’s third Kentucky location and officially opens at 9 a.m., November 15. The first 100 customers through the door Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday will receive special Half Price Books tote bags containing $5 gift cards and every day one lucky customer will receive a gift card worth $250. The new store occupies 10,000 square feet, and is open Monday through Saturday 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
